What Did You Play Mondays? April 15, 2019

Join the Board Game Conversation. What Did You Play Mondays: April 15, 2019

Great week! This week I played:

  • Chakra is the game in this week's photo and I'll be buying my own copy as soon as I can. A super clever puzzly-game about aligning your chakra. Gorgeous art and clever game play about being the most efficient with your movement.

  • I got my copy of Wreck Raiders on Friday and we swam for sunken treasure on Sunday. WOW! This game is BRILLIANT! I'm a big fanboy of Josh Cappel's work and the games of Tim W.K. Brown but they've really poured everything I love in games into Wreck Raiders! Worker placement, dice drafting, so many paths to victory points - and victory, 2 kinds of set collection, with amazing artwork and very little down-time because the game plays speedily and you are usually getting some kind of treasure or reward even on other players turns. Two thumbs (at least) waaay up for this one! Absolutely LOVED it and can't wait to play it again and again!

  • Everdell is another exciting new worker placement game that we got. So many interesting decisions to make here as you draft cards into your city and build your tableau of cards for powerful combinations and points. At the beginning of the game, you're thinking, "I'll never get enough resources or cards to do anything and I don't have enough workers!" but a couple of turns in you start to see how the combos you are building help you do more and make you say, "WOW! This game is awesome!" Stunning artwork on just about every card. Gorgeous!

  • Space Base is probably my #1 or #2 obsession right now. I can't get enough of this game. I was hoping to buy the expansion that just came out but it was sold out, so we played the base game. I'm craving more!

  • A Fake Artist Goes to Toronto. We played my slightly redesigned version of A Fake Artist Goes to New York. I find that the fake artist is usually pretty easy to pick out but this game is so quick, short and fun that I can over look it.

  • Gorus Maximus can play up to EIGHT players! That's a lot. This was our first game with that many players - and now I know why they recommend playing in teams. A fantastic trick-taking game but it can be very long with 8 players. We'll be playing in teams the next time we play with more than 5 players. Still love this game!

  • Fantasy Realms is a super-easy-to-learn card game about making endgame scoring combos. I don't think I've ever played a game quite like this. You're not playing cards in front of you but instead adding them to your hand and at the end of the game the cards in your hand score you points. A LOT of points! Scoring is insane but the WizKids app does that for you very quickly. This game is feels very different than anything else I've played. I'm not sure that I really enjoyed this game but I think everyone should at least give it a try.

  • And another play of a game that I cannot yet speak about.

Also I missed my update from last week when we played:

  • Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit. Still one of my all-time favourite, most exciting games to play about one of the most disappointing movies. I think I'll be getting this one back to the table a lot more in the near future.

  • Nemesis is an epic gaming experience and a fantastic game! You literally feel like you are playing out one of the unseen Aliens movies. You can't trust anyone and it's bleak and dark and tense. We're sort of working together but we're really not. Instantly one of my all-time favourite games. Comparable to Battlestar Galactica in my opinion but it plays in a couple of hours (without losing any of that epic feel). Lots of different game modes, great minis. They could charge $400 for this when it comes to retail stores and I'd still be in line to buy a copy.

  • Gorus Maximus again. Such a great game to play with friends and chat and catch-up while playing.

  • Skull King is another great trick-taking game. Sometimes you just need a game that you can play while trash-talking eachother using pirate-isms. "Take that, ya scurvy dog!" Highly recommend this game for families and casual gamers.
